Hi Alena, Thanks for your comments. We are not affiliated with either of the programs you mentioned. As far as I know, bot Smiles Change Lives and Smiles for a Lifetime are scholarship programs that orthodontists sign up with and run from their own…

Colorado Orthodontic Foundation- Hello Ladies!

Posted by Alexandra Gage on January 6, 2012 at 8:42am 7 Comments

Hello to Women in Orthodontics!

As a new member to the page, I just wanted to make sure to get the word out about the non-profit organization that I manage here in Colorado. The Colorado Orthodontic Foundation (COF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit committed to the mission of providing affordable orthodontic treatment and education to as many financially challenged children and families as possible.

We received our 501(c)3 approval in 2009, so we are still a young organization, but in the time since then we have been able to start treatment on over 130 deserving patients. We screen patients for income-level eligibility (focusing on families that have CHP+ or are uninsured or under-insured) and provide orthodontic treatments to these patients at a fraction of the cost of private office treatment. We do this by enlisting the help of generous orthodontists from all over the Denver Metro and Colorado Springs who donate their skills at no cost -- the patient's fee goes towards paying for operational costs, equipment, orthodontic supplies, etc.

One of the best parts about our organization is the amazing people we get to work with. We have two women orthodontists (Dr. Cassy Wiggins of Summit Orthodontics in Parker, CO and Dr. Amy Shearer of Canyon Point Orthodontics in Golden, CO) who freely volunteer one clinic day every other month to dedicate solely to COF patients. Without the generosity of spirit of these two doctors and others like them who treat COF patients in their private offices, our organization could not exist, much less expand to the levels we are at currently.

I am proud to be a part of such a great cause (bringing even more beautiful smiles to appreciative and deserving families), and I hope that we can provide our services for many years to come. To get more information about our organization, please feel free to visit www.coloradoorthodonticfoundation.org.…

Any ideas on this patient's retainer allergy problem?

Posted by Pamela Waterman on November 14, 2011 at 12:02pm 0 Comments

Hi everyone -

I just read about the following problem on a forum where I help with Q/As:

Question:

My daughter had her braces removed in March and started wearing acrylic and metal retainers.  She has been experiencing very swollen lips and severe chapping and peeling.  We have seen numerous doctors, allergists and dermatologists and nobody can figure out what is causing this.  We recently had a patch test done on her and she is allergic to nickel, cobalt chloride, propolis and fragrance.  Having said that, she has never had any other type of reaction to any of these products in her 15 years of life and still isn’t.  I really wonder if she is allergic to her retainers because her reaction is limited to her lips only.  Please help.  We are out of options and she cannot live on steriod lip meds forever.

Any ideas to help solve this problem? I can post them. Thanks!
